Everyone is juggling new information daily, making new decisions and preparing for whatever comes next.

Comfort is needed in such cases; comfort where you just relax and let things be. This is where rewatching your old favourite shows comes in.

Watching something new inherently requires you to think, to learn the characters, the plot line and to predict what will happen next.

But there’s no guesswork, cliffhangers, or stressful anticipation when watching an old favourite show.

According to Psychology Today, rewatching old shows helps manage emotions by releasing dopamine, offering you calm that can ease anxiety.

IOL notes these as some of the benefits you might reap from turning on your old favourite show again:

You feel restored

Sometimes, you don’t have the energy required to pay close attention to a new show. The new characters you need to acquaint yourself with can be a lot to handle when you’re exhausted.

You are never disappointed

Familiarity breeds comfort. This is why most people gravitate towards familiar shows during times of stress. Studies show that when people are faced with a choice to try something new or continue a habit they have, they tend to choose to keep things the same.

Background noise

Sometimes, it is not just about actively watching old shows; it’s about the familiar sound the shows bring. This creates background noise while you cook, clean or scroll through your phone, creating a sense of companionship.

There’s a sense of community

Social lives aren’t limited only to in-person relationships with friends and family. Show narratives and parasocial relationships can help create social purposes with other fans of the show you like.
