More Silvermine hiking trails re-open after April fire

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially reopened Silvermine Gate 1, along with a multitude of trails in the scenic Silvermine area on Table Mountain.

This reopening, effective from Monday, marks the second phase of recovery following a devastating fire in late April 2025, which scorched approximately 2,800 hectares of landscape.

Silvermine, nestled within the central section of Table Mountain National Park, is renowned for its breathtaking hikes and vibrant fynbos vegetation.

The first phase of reopening kicked off on 1 July, where visitors gained access to Silvermine Gate 2 and parts of Tokai, gradually restoring public enjoyment of the natural beauty that had struggled to rejuvenate in the wake of disaster.

As part of ongoing restoration efforts, Upper Tokai also reopened today. This area had faced temporary closures in July due to unstable terrain following unprecedented rainfall. However, cyclists looking to traverse from the Silvermine boom gate to the Level 4 and 5 junction must wait, as this section remains off-limits while rehabilitation work continues.

The eagerly awaited reopening encompasses the popular Donkey Trail, which connects Silvermine to Upper Tokai, as well as the Level 1 and 2 Jeep tracks for horseback riders. Unfortunately, these routes will remain closed indefinitely due to significant rain damage, underscoring the challenges still facing the park.

Visitors to Silvermine Gate 1, situated on the western approach via Ou Kaapse Weg, are invited to explore Silvermine Dam, Elephant’s Eye trail, and the Silvermine Riverwalk.

While the infrastructure previously damaged by fire is under reconstruction, maintenance teams are hard at work to introduce new ablution facilities for the comfort of guests.

For the time being, facilities located at the entrance gate and nearby the dam’s western side remain accessible, albeit with ongoing restoration efforts anticipated well into December 2025.

Moreover, SANParks emphasises that user safety is paramount, and areas will be restricted despite appearances of stability. This decision aims to support ecological restoration while protecting visitors and park officials have urged all trail users to heed signage, respect area closures, and follow guidance from rangers.

SANParks has rolled out Safety Awareness Campaigns as visitors are invited back into nature’s embrace.
