Organic methods for naturally killing weeds in your yard

An increasing number of homeowners are opting out of using store-bought pesticides due to environmental concerns and the negative effects these chemicals can have. In response, they are exploring environmentally friendly methods to manage weeds in their gardens and lawns.

Removal by hand

The easiest and most effective way to control weeds is by removing them by hand, using traditional methods. While this can be quite labour-intensive—particularly if your lawn has a significant weed problem—consistently working on it over time will help. It is important to remove weeds before they flower.

Home remedies

Sometimes the old ways are the best. Some weed-killing recipes have been helping out for many generations, making it possible to eradicate weeds without ever buying store-bought chemicals. The most common home-brew uses some combination of vinegar and sometimes dish soap. Just pay attention to ratios if you choose to make your own home remedy.

Using mulch

Another helpful tip for maintaining a healthy lawn is to use mulch, organic mulch such as shredded leaves, straw, or wood chips. Applying this material around your lawn can effectively block sunlight from reaching weed seeds. This prevents them from germinating and inhibits growth beneath the mulch. Mulch also provides needed nutrients as it decomposes over time and moderates soil temperatures for your other plants.

Lawn trimming

Sunny weather promotes the growth of weeds, making it important for homeowners to trim their lawns regularly. Direct sunlight activates dormant weeds, causing them to proliferate. It’s advisable to choose a lawnmower with adjustable cutting heights, so you can adjust the grass length according to its growth throughout Spring and Summer.
