Grandparents often play an important role in families, offering love, wisdom, support and treasured memories. As they get older, however, they may need a little extra support with their physical, emotional and social well-being.

National Grandparents Day is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate them while also checking in on what can help them feel healthy, connected and valued.
Supporting a grandparent does not always require major changes. Small, consistent gestures can make a meaningful difference.
1. Make time for regular check-ins
A phone call, video call or quick visit can give grandparents something to look forward to, especially if they spend a lot of time alone.
Ask how they are doing and give them space to talk about what is happening in their lives.
2. Encourage social connection
Staying socially connected can help older adults maintain a sense of belonging. Encourage your grandparents to spend time with friends, neighbours, family members or community groups.
You could also arrange regular family lunches, outings or visits so they have opportunities to connect with loved ones.
3. Help them stay active
Physical activity can support mobility, strength and overall well-being as people age.
Depending on their abilities and health needs, encourage activities such as walking, gardening, stretching or other gentle forms of exercise. If they have health concerns, encourage them to speak to a healthcare professional about suitable activities.
4. Make healthy meals together
Nutrition becomes particularly important as we get older. Instead of simply telling your grandparents to eat healthier, make it something you can do together.
Prepare nutritious meals, try new recipes or help with grocery shopping. It can become both a healthy habit and quality time together.
5. Help with everyday tasks
Tasks that once felt simple can become more difficult with age.
Offer practical assistance with shopping, household chores, technology, transport or appointments when needed. However, allow your grandparents to remain independent where they can and want to be.

6. Check in on their emotional well-being
Physical health is only one part of well-being. Ask your grandparents how they are feeling emotionally and pay attention to changes in their mood or behaviour.
Create an environment where they feel comfortable talking about loneliness, stress, grief or other challenges.
7. Keep their minds engaged
Encourage activities that they enjoy and that keep them mentally engaged. Reading, puzzles, playing games, cooking, gardening, music and learning new skills can all provide stimulation and enjoyment.
Most importantly, let them choose activities that genuinely interest them.
8. Make their home safer
Take a look around their home for potential hazards. Poor lighting, loose rugs, clutter and slippery surfaces can increase the risk of falls.
Simple changes, such as improving lighting and keeping walkways clear, can make their environment more comfortable and accessible.
9. Support their independence
Helping your grandparents does not mean taking over their lives.
Ask what they need rather than assuming. Give them choices and encourage them to continue doing the things they enjoy and are capable of doing safely.
Feeling independent and involved in decisions about their own lives can be important to their overall well-being.
10. Spend quality time together
Perhaps the simplest way to support your grandparents is to spend time with them.
Look through old photographs, listen to their stories, watch a favourite movie, cook together or simply sit and chat. These moments can strengthen family bonds while creating memories that everyone can treasure.
Supporting grandparents beyond 1 day
National Grandparents Day is a reminder to appreciate older family members, but supporting their well-being should not be limited to one occasion.
Whether it is a weekly phone call, helping with an errand or simply sitting down for a cup of tea and a conversation, consistent acts of care can help grandparents feel connected, respected and valued.
