7 Simple ways grandparents can bond with their grandchildren

Being a grandparent is about more than birthdays, gifts and family gatherings. Small, consistent efforts can help create a close and lasting relationship with grandchildren.

As children grow, their interests and communication habits change. Grandparents can stay connected by being flexible and meeting them where they are.

Below are ways for grandparents to bond with their grandchildren, as explained by Focus on the Family Canada.

Respect their parents’ rules

Grandparents may have plenty of parenting experience, but their adult children are now in charge. Respect household rules around things such as bedtime, food and screen time. Trying to override parents’ decisions can create tension and damage trust.

Being a loving grandparent doesn’t mean having to be the one who breaks the rules.

Don’t take everything personally

A toddler ending a video call after a few seconds or a teenager taking hours to respond to a message doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t care. Children and teenagers have busy lives. Avoid putting pressure on them to communicate in a particular way.

Take an interest in their world

Ask about school, hobbies, friends, sports or music. Attend a school event, watch them play sport or simply let them show you something they’re excited about. If you live far away, video calls and messages can help you stay involved.

Make time for one-on-one moments

Each grandchild has their own personality and interests. Spending individual time together can help grandparents understand them better. It doesn’t have to be an expensive outing. A walk, a meal, a conversation, or a shared activity can create meaningful memories.

Offer guidance without controlling

Grandparents have years of experience, but advice is most helpful when it doesn’t become pressure. Share your perspective when appropriate, then give your children and grandchildren room to make their own decisions.

Choose love over judgement

Grandchildren won’t always make choices their grandparents agree with. Differences in appearance, interests, friendships or personal decisions don’t have to damage the relationship. You can disagree while still making sure your grandchild knows they are loved.

Keep showing up

Strong grandparent-grandchild relationships are usually built over time. A quick message, a regular phone call, a visit, or an interest in an important event can remind a grandchild that they matter. You don’t need elaborate plans to build a meaningful bond. Being present, supportive and genuinely interested can make all the difference.
