Insomnia giving you a difficult time? Explore the benefits of white noise

by Sergio Miller

We all dread those nights when we find ourselves tossing and turning, hoping to find the perfect position to settle in and fall asleep. For some, the grueling effects of insomnia make falling asleep a particularly challenging task.

While various forms of medication could play a vital role in ensuring that you are set free from that troublesome battle, a soothing sound could be the key ingredient to setting you free. Ever heard of white noise?

What is white noise?

“White noise refers to a noise that contains all frequencies across the spectrum of audible sound in equal measure. Because white noise spans multiple bands of sound, it is sometimes referred to as broadband noise. Anecdotally, people often liken white noise to the static that comes from an untuned radio or television,” explains online publication, the Sleep Foundation.

The above-mentioned publication further adds that researchers have studied the effect of white noise on humans for several years and have found evidence that it helps reduce crying in infants, improves work performance, potentially helps counteract symptoms of ADHD, and positively affects human sleep.

This idea was supported by Dr. Sogol Javaheri, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and physician in the division of sleep and circadian rhythm disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

In an article published by Harvard Health Dr. Sogol stated, “A study in infants and children showed that white noise may reduce heart rate and respiratory rate, effectively lulling an individual to sleep.”

Examples of white noise include:

  • The sound of water streaming down a waterfall
  • A hiss of a radio
  • Sound of the sea
  • Leaves rustling in the wind

Moreover, Yoga Sleep highlights that white noise comes with multiple benefits:

  • White noise creates an evening ritual/routine
  • It signals your brain with sound
  • Keeps the room quiet
  • Trains our brain to relax
  • Helps us sleep soundly

So, the next time you find yourself struggling with insomnia, take some time to listen to the soothing sounds of nature. Perhaps this would be the key remedy that takes you to dreamland.
