In an age where screens and digital distractions abound, fostering a genuine love for reading in children is both a challenge and a priceless gift. Helping your child develop a passion for books not only enriches their imagination but also strengthens critical thinking and language skills.

These are practical and thoughtful strategies that help nurture your child’s love for reading.

Create a reading-friendly environment

Make reading a natural and enjoyable part of everyday life by creating a cosy, inviting space filled with a variety of books suited to your child’s interests and reading level. Incorporate colourful, tactile books and integrate e-books or audiobooks to complement traditional reading, recognising that technology can enhance the experience when used thoughtfully.

Be a reading role model

Children imitate their parents, so let them see you regularly engaged with books. Share your enthusiasm for stories, discuss interesting passages, and read aloud together. This way, reading becomes a pleasurable and valuable activity rather than a chore.

Choose books that spark interest

Offer books that align with your child’s passions—whether it’s adventure, science fiction, sports, or history. Allowing children to select their own reading material empowers them and respects their preferences, making reading a more personal and exciting journey.

Incorporate interactive and diverse reading experiences

Use interactive storytelling apps, book clubs, or library events to make reading social and dynamic. Introduce books featuring diverse characters and cultures to broaden your child’s worldview and foster empathy alongside literacy.

Encourage consistent reading habits

Establish a daily reading routine by setting aside dedicated times, such as before bedtime or after school. Celebrate milestones and progress to encourage continued engagement without introducing pressure or competition.

Helping your child fall in love with reading in 2026 requires patience, creativity, and support. By cultivating a nurturing environment, leading by example, and respecting your child’s unique interests, you lay the foundation for a lifelong journey of discovery and joy through books.
