Hacks to remove water stains from wood

Water stains on wood can be unsightly but they don’t have to be permanent.

If you’re battling a stubborn mark on your coffee table, try one of these 6 practical ways to get rid of water stains on wood, using items that you probably have at home.

1. Hairdryer

Tip: Use a hairdryer on its highest setting.

For water stains that are still fresh, a hairdryer can be very effective for getting rid of the marks. Aim the hairdryer directly at the stain and hold it close until the stain disappears. This method works by quickly evaporating the moisture trapped in the wood finish. Once the wood has cooled, polish the area with furniture oil or olive oil to restore its shine.

2. Iron

Tip: Use an iron on a low setting.

Place a clean cotton cloth over the water stain. Set your iron at a low temperature with no water in it. Briefly place the iron on the cloth over the stain for a few seconds. Lift and check the stain, repeating as necessary until the stain is gone. This works best for stains that are still damp.

3. Mayonnaise

Tip: Use mayonnaise to remove water rings.

It may sound like an old wives’ tale, but this method is tried and true. The oil in mayonnaise helps displace moisture trapped in the wood’s finish. Dab a generous amount of mayonnaise onto the stain using a paper towel. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Wipe away the mayonnaise with a clean cloth and polish the surface.

4. Vinegar and olive oil

Tip: Mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil.

Mixed distilled white vinegar and olive oil in a small bowl. Apply this mixture to the stain with a cloth, making sure to wipe in the direction of the wood grain. The vinegar helps to remove the stain, while the olive oil polishes. Finish by wiping with a clean, dry cloth.

5. Baking soda

Tip: Make a paste with baking soda and water.

Baking soda proves its usefulness time and time again. Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste. Apply this paste to the stain using a microfiber cloth and gently rub the surface in a circular motion. Wipe away any remaining paste with a dry microfiber cloth. This method is more useful for light stains.
