How to clean and care for wooden chopping boards

Wooden chopping boards are not only beautiful but also durable and versatile. However, to ensure their longevity and maintain hygiene, proper cleaning and care are essential. Here are some simple steps to help you clean and take care of your wooden chopping board.

Wash it gently: After each use, wash the board with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a soft sponge or cloth to avoid scratching the surface. Avoid immersing the board in water for too long, as excessive moisture can warp the wood.

Remove stains and odors: According to New York Times, o remove stains or odors, sprinkle some salt on the board and rub it with half a lemon. The salt acts as a gentle abrasive while the lemon helps to freshen and disinfect. Rinse well afterward.

Avoid harsh cleaners: Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on wooden chopping boards, as they can damage the wood and leave harmful residues. Stick to natural cleaning solutions.

Dry it thoroughly: After washing, pat the board dry with a clean towel. To ensure complete drying, prop it up vertically or place it in a well-ventilated area. Avoid air-drying it flat, as moisture can get trapped underneath and lead to mold or warping.

Oil it regularly: To maintain the wood’s natural moisture and prevent cracking, regularly oil the chopping board with food-grade mineral oil or specialised cutting board oil. Apply the oil with a clean cloth, let it sit for a few hours, and wipe off the excess. According to Simply Recipes, you should ideally oil your board 8 times a year but there isn’t a set number of times as to when you should.

Store it properly: Store the wooden chopping board in a dry and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid stacking other items on top of it, as this can cause warping.

Regularly inspect for damage: Check your chopping board for any signs of damage, such as deep cuts, cracks, or splinters. If you notice any, sand them down with fine-grit sandpaper and reapply oil to protect the wood.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your wooden chopping board clean, hygienic, and looking beautiful for years to come. With proper care, your chopping board will continue to be a reliable kitchen companion.
