Many people believe that alcohol can make you feel warmer, especially on a cold day. But is there any truth to this popular belief? Let’s take a closer look.
According to Mental Floss, when you consume alcohol, it causes your blood vessels to dilate, or expand. This dilation can give you a warm sensation in your skin, making you think you’re getting warmer. However, the truth is that alcohol actually lowers your core body temperature.
The reason behind this paradoxical effect lies in how your body regulates heat. Normally, your body maintains a stable internal temperature of around 37 degrees Celsius. When you’re exposed to cold temperatures, your body activates certain mechanisms to keep you warm.
One of these mechanisms is vasoconstriction, which is the narrowing of blood vessels near the skin’s surface. This helps to conserve heat and keep it within the core of your body. When you consume alcohol, it relaxes the smooth muscles in your blood vessels, causing them to widen. This dilation leads to increased blood flow to the skin, which can make you feel warmer on the surface.
However, while alcohol may create the sensation of warmth on your skin, it’s important to remember that this warmth is only temporary. As your blood vessels expand, more heat is lost from your core, causing your internal body temperature to drop.
In fact, alcohol can be dangerous in cold weather conditions. When your core body temperature drops too low, it can lead to hypothermia, a potentially life-threatening condition. Alcohol can impair your judgment and decision-making abilities, making it harder for you to recognize the signs of hypothermia and take appropriate actions to warm up.
Alcohol may give you a false sense of warmth by dilating your blood vessels and increasing blood flow to your skin and this temporary sensation doesn’t actually raise your core body temperature. So, when it comes to staying warm, it’s better to choose safer alternatives and rely on appropriate clothing and protective measures. Stay safe and keep warm!
