The New Guard: Who is Chloe Malle, The Woman Stepping Into Anna Wintour’s Realm at Vogue?

by Zaghrah Anthony

In the hallowed halls of Condé Nast, a changing of the guard is underway. But if you’re expecting a dramatic power struggle or a farewell to an icon, think again. The news that Chloe Malle is succeeding Anna Wintour as the head of American Vogue is less about an ending and more about a masterful, calculated evolution.

Effective immediately, the 39-year-old Malle—a Vogue veteran since 2011 and most recently the driving force behind Vogue.com—steps into the newly minted role of “Head of Editorial Content.” The title itself is a tell. This isn’t just about a new editor-in-chief; it’s a statement of intent. The future of Vogue is digital, cross-platform, and still very much under the watchful eye of its legendary predecessor.

A Succession, Not an Exit

Let’s be clear: Anna Wintour isn’t going anywhere. She remains Condé Nast’s Chief Content Officer and the Global Editorial Director of Vogue, overseeing all international editions and mega-events like the Met Gala. She’s not leaving the building; she’s just moving down the hall.

This carefully orchestrated move allows Wintour to focus on the global empire while entrusting the day-to-day heartbeat of the American flagship to a leader she clearly believes in. In a statement, Wintour praised Malle’s ability to find the balance between “American Vogue’s long, singular history and its future on the front lines of the new.”

It’s the ultimate vote of confidence, passing the baton to a protégé who understands that Vogue’s power lies in honoring its legacy while fearlessly charging into the digital fray.

The Digital Architect

So, why Chloe Malle? Look no further than her stunning track record. Since taking the helm of Vogue.com in 2021, she hasn’t just managed the website; she has supercharged it. Under her leadership, the site saw direct traffic double and achieved record growth, particularly around tentpole events.

But Malle’s genius isn’t just in analytics; it’s in creativity. She is the inventive mind behind some of Vogue’s most buzzed-about and delightfully quirky digital features. She launched the wildly popular canine-themed spin-off, Dogue (yes, a Vogue for dogs), and the insightful Vogue Vintage Guide, proving she understands that a modern media brand needs both serious authority and a sense of humor.

She didn’t just report on culture; she created it, using newsletters and the fashion culture podcast The Run-Through to build a deeper, more conversational relationship with an audience that consumes content on its own terms.

More Than a Famous Name

Of course, the headlines will note that Chloe Malle comes from a famous pedigree as the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and the late, revered director Louis Malle. She was born in New York and raised between there and Los Angeles, a background that undoubtedly gave her an innate understanding of the cultural currents that Vogue navigates.

But to focus solely on that would be a disservice. Malle is a seasoned journalist in her own right. A Brown University graduate, she cut her teeth at the New York Observer and contributed to prestigious outlets like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal long before she ever walked into Vogue. She earned her stripes.

In her own statement, Malle struck a tone that was both thrilled and reverent, acknowledging the “breakneck speed” of fashion and media while noting she feels “incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”

The message is one of continuity. As New York Fashion Week, the Met Gala, and Vogue World loom on the horizon, the American Vogue machine will have a new conductor. But the composer, it seems, will still be listening closely. The era of Malle isn’t a revolution; it’s a savvy, digital-first succession designed to ensure the most powerful name in fashion remains exactly that.
