Could not get a spot in university after passing Grade 12? Worry not, as not every well-paying jobs require a university certificate.

Many South Africans never attend university for reasons that range from financial constraints and insufficient grades to simply not being interested in careers that require a degree. Statistics South Africa reports consistently show that unemployment in South Africa remains high, particularly among individuals without any formal qualifications.

Here are some of the career paths that do not need a qualification from university:

South African Defence Force

A university degree is not compulsory to join the army in South Africa. Candidates are required to go through the Military Skills Development System (MSDS). The Recruits receive military training and further functional training in their first year of service. During the second year of service, depending on the duration of the functional orientation, they will be deployed where needed and given opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop their skills.

Politician

Many political leaders start their careers through community involvement and party membership.

Police Officer

Candidates must complete training at a police academy and meet physical and educational requirements, typically a matric certificate. The candidates must also be permanent residents/citizen, 18–30 years old, with no criminal record or visible tattoos.

Pilot Captain

A degree is not compulsory to become a pilot captain in South Africa. Candidates must have a Matric Certificate (with English, Maths, and Physical Science preferred), and hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate from an approved examiner.
