Car buying 101: A helpful guide for newbies

Traditionally, cars have been a male bastion, with men often being the ones who know their engines, models, and mechanics like the back of their hand.

However, as the world evolves, women have taken over and shown their capabilities in many departments. This has led to many owning cars, and some aspiring while working hard towards the goal.

Purchasing a car can be challenging. Sometimes, having an extra pair of eyes can help you make a more informed decision and ensure the car serves you well for years to come. After all, the last thing you need is buying a car that will be worthless in a year or so.

As a girlie who is planning to purchase a car, here is what you need to consider.

Purpose: You need to know why you are buying the car. Determine the primary use of the vehicle so you can buy a suitable car. The questions you need to ask yourself are: Is it for daily commuting? Family trips or cargo space?

Lifestyle: In this case, you need to consider your lifestyle and driving habits to determine the appropriate size, features and fuel type. For example are you a local driver, or do you take long trips?

Budget: You need to be honest with yourself, and determine a realistic budget that includes not just the purchase price, but also ongoing costs such as fuel, insurance and potential repairs.

Models: Before you go ahead with the purchase, research various car models to help you make an informed decision. You also need to compare their features, fuel efficiency and reliability.

New vs Used: Peer pressure aside, you need to weigh the pros and cons of new and used vehicles. Have a close look at the warranty, initial costs, etc.
