5 Ways to protect yourself from car theft and hijacking

Losing a car to theft or hijacking is undoubtably one of the scariest things one can go through. Hijackings usually occur in a forceful manner, with the perpetrator/s carrying a weapon, a sight that is likely to traumatise anyone who goes through this experience.

Whenever we get into our cars, it is important to always stay cautious while on the road to try and protect ourselves from theft and hijackings at all times. Below are five ways to protect yourself and your car from theft and hijacking provided by insurance comparer Hippo.

  1. Stay vigilant when behind the wheel. Be aware of your surroundings and always check if you’re being followed, especially as you approach your home.
  2. Always leave space between you and the car in front of you (ideally, you should be able to see their back tyres) so that you have space to manoeuvre if you find yourself in a threatening situation.
  3. A whopping 80% of hijackings happen in driveways. Instead of turning into your driveway while waiting for the gate to open, wait in the road so that you can drive off if you need to.
  4. Never drive with your handbag, phone or other valuables visible on the passenger seat or centre console. Store them out of sight in the boot.
  5. Remote jamming is becoming increasingly common so always check that your car is locked before walking away.
