Things to consider when taking parenting advice as a new mom

Becoming a new mom can feel like entering a world of endless advice. From well-meaning family members to parenting influencers and social media groups, everyone seems to have an opinion on sleep, feeding, routines and what is ‘best’ for your baby.

But not all parenting advice is equal — and what works for one family may not work for another.

Here are a few things to consider.

Consider the source

Before following advice, consider who is giving it and whether their information is evidence-based. For questions about your baby’s health, feeding, development or vaccinations, prioritise guidance from qualified healthcare professionals and reputable organisations such as the South African National Department of Health and the World Health Organisation.

South Africa’s Department of Health guidelines emphasise that care should be tailored to the individual needs of each mother and baby.

Remember that every baby is different

There is no single parenting formula. Babies have different temperaments, feeding patterns and sleep needs.

Advice that worked brilliantly for your sister, friend or favourite parenting creator might not suit your baby — and that does not mean you are doing anything wrong.

For example, safe-sleep guidance is not simply a matter of personal preference: The World Health Organisation recommends placing babies on their backs to sleep during the first year.

Know when to ask for help

Parenting advice should never replace professional medical care. If your newborn is feeding poorly, unusually inactive, having difficulty breathing, has a fever or otherwise seems unwell, seek medical attention promptly.

Trust yourself, too

Perhaps the most important advice for a new mom is to permit yourself to filter the noise.

Pregnancy & Newborn recommends trusting your instincts. Ask questions, check the evidence and choose advice that aligns with your baby’s needs, your circumstances and professional guidance. You do not need to follow every opinion you hear to be a good mother.
