Keeping a relationship strong is no easy task. There needs to be an understanding, honesty and communication to make it work. However, this is not all that needs to be implemented.

Here are 10 important factors by WebMD that can help keep your relationship healthy.

  1. A satisfying sexual relationship.
  2. Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
  3. The ability to show and accept affection.
  4. Genuinely liking and respecting each other.
  5. Doing things just to make each other happy.
  6. Enjoying and valuing your time together and actively working to make it happen.
  7. Realistic and agreed upon expectations of each other, with a willingness to live up to those expectations.
  8. A commitment to work through conflicts and disagreements in a respectful manner. This should be paired with an ability to forgive and accept forgiveness.
  9. A strong sense of commitment to the relationship, a willingness to stick with the relationship through momentary conflicts and periods of disinterest, or even dislike.
  10. A shared philosophy of life which should include values and priorities. This includes shared attitudes about family and friends, or a shared philosophy on parenting.

WebMD also notes that couples will do well when directly addressing their problems. They should first assess and then find a way to overcome these issues. “The best way to approach this is together – because a two-person problem requires a two-person solution. And the more both people are invested in nurturing their relationship, the better chance that relationship has for a strong, intimate connection.”
