A 30-year-old man from Gqeberha, Zolani Zondani, received a hero’s welcome in Cape Town. This comes after he walked over 120 hours to raise awareness on a campaign which focuses on mental health issues affecting men.
Zolani, who is from Soweto on Sea, started his walk from Gqeberha to Cape Town last week Monday because he needed to raise funds to register his NPO named Broski, a platform where men can be free to share their feelings.
Concerns of crime led Zolani to hitchhike from Caledon to Sir Lowry Pass, and start his walk there. He shared a live clip of him walking to Cape Town CBD escorted by traffic officers and people who have been supporting and following his journey.
His first welcome was in Strand, where he found a group of people waiting and cheering him on. He received gifts and snacks for the journey ahead. Zolani then rushed to Cape Town CBD, to freshen up and meet the Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.
On his live clips, he expressed that he believes he has introduced Broski to the people and he believes that Soweto on Sea will not be the same again. He also shared that next year he might embark on a journey to Johannesburg, to raise awareness.
As he was walking, he used his cellphone to update his followers and to share his journey. Zolani works as a sales consultant at OK Furniture and studies civil engineering at PE College. He said the walk has been tough, his body aches, and some people online have mocked him, but he refuses to stop.
