The University of the Free State has decided to discontinue the use of AI detection software across all faculties starting in July. This decision is based on concerns about the reliability and fairness of such technology.
Moving forward, the university will foster a culture of integrity by training first-year students in the ethical use of AI. Assessments will include components that focus on AI critique and transparency. These elements are essential when working with AI.

What led to the decision
The decision reflects growing international concern about the role and effectiveness of AI detection technologies, while reinforcing the UFS’s focus on critical thinking, ethical AI literacy and meaningful student development.
Where lecturers are encouraged to model responsible practices, and students must explicitly state how AI assisted their work, explaining how they used AI to complete their work. The discontinuation of the use of detection software will come into effect from 1 July 2026.

According to Prof Anthea Rhoda of the university, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, the move reflects the university’s commitment to protecting both academic integrity and fairness. “Academic integrity remains central to the work of the university.
Prof. Rhoda continues to say, “What is changing is our approach. Rather than relying primarily on technologies whose outcomes remain contested within global higher education contexts, we are reaffirming the importance of academic judgement, transparent assessment practices, and the responsible use of generative AI.”
