Spotify And ChatGPT: A New Kind Of Listening Experience
Spotify has teamed up with OpenAI’s ChatGPT to make discovering music and podcasts feel a little more human. The integration, now live across 145 countries, lets users connect their Spotify accounts to ChatGPT for personalised recommendations and even custom playlist creation through simple conversation.
Free users can still enjoy curated staples like Discover Weekly and New Music Friday, but Premium subscribers get something extra: the ability to turn detailed prompts into entirely personalised playlists. Want a mix that feels like a late-night drive through Jozi or a chill Sunday morning in Maboneng? ChatGPT can now make that happen.
How It Works
The connection is completely opt-in, meaning users decide when to link or unlink their Spotify accounts. Once connected, ChatGPT will surface the Spotify app in the chat interface, ready to build playlists based on whatever mood or theme you describe.
The feature is available to both Free and Plus ChatGPT users on web and mobile (iOS and Android), giving millions the ability to test-drive conversational playlist curation for the first time.
Protecting Artists In The AI Era
Spotify says it’s committed to protecting artists’ and creators’ work amid its growing use of artificial intelligence. The company confirmed that it will not share music, podcasts, or videos with OpenAI for model training, ensuring content remains off-limits to external machine learning systems.
This partnership follows Spotify’s recent tightening of its AI policies. The platform now targets “bad actors” who use AI for spam, impersonation, or voice cloning, while still encouraging responsible innovation from musicians.
Charlie Hellman, Spotify’s head of music, explained: “We’re not here to punish artists for using AI responsibly. We want to help them be more creative and offer fans better experiences. But we are here to stop those who try to game the system.”
AI Meets Everyday Creativity
For ChatGPT, this partnership fits into its growing push to bring interactive tools into everyday chat experiences. The AI platform now integrates with apps like Canva and Coursera, allowing users to generate slides, summarise lessons, or expand ideas without leaving the chat.
By integrating Spotify, OpenAI aims to keep its 800 million weekly users engaged within one seamless ecosystem. The move blurs the line between productivity, entertainment, and conversation, showing how AI can make even music discovery feel intuitive and personal.
