If you’re a DStv subscriber, there’s some exciting news coming your way. Canal+, the new parent company of MultiChoice, has big plans to change how you watch your favourite shows — by combining all its streaming platforms into one powerful “super app.”
One App For Everything You Love
The French broadcaster Canal+ recently completed its takeover of MultiChoice, which means it now controls DStv, GOtv, Showmax, and DStv Stream — reaching more than 14 million viewers across Africa.
Now, the company wants to merge all these services into one simple platform that gives you access to everything from local dramas and live sport to international blockbusters — all in one place.
Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada says the aim is to make life easier for viewers. “We want to make it as convenient and enjoyable as possible for subscribers to find great content from around the world, as well as their favourite local shows,” he explained.
A New Era For DStv And Streaming
It’s no secret that more South Africans are streaming than ever before. With options like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, traditional satellite TV has had to evolve — and DStv’s “super app” could be the big game changer.
Instead of switching between DStv Stream, Showmax, and Canal+, users could soon open just one app with everything inside — from local soapies to UEFA Champions League matches and the latest series.
Industry watchers believe this move could help DStv stand stronger against global competitors by giving subscribers a wider variety of content and a smoother digital experience.
Celebrating African Storytelling
David Mignot, who now heads Canal+ Africa (which includes MultiChoice), says one of the most exciting parts of this merger is the focus on African creativity.
“MultiChoice content is incredible,” he said. “By combining our strengths, we’ll have one of the biggest entertainment libraries in the world — including more than 9,000 international movies and thousands of hours of African content.”
Together, Canal+ and MultiChoice produce around 10,000 hours of African and international content every year, in over 30 languages — from isiZulu and Swahili to French and Arabic. This expansion means local stories could soon reach new global audiences.
New Leadership, New Direction
The merger has also brought changes at the top. Former MultiChoice CEO Calvo Mawela has been appointed chairman of Canal+ Africa, while Maxime Saada becomes chair of the MultiChoice board. Both teams are now working together to build a stronger, more connected entertainment brand for Africa.
What It Means For South Africans
For everyday viewers, the idea of a single app could mean less hassle and more entertainment. You’ll no longer need to jump between platforms — and you might even discover new shows from across Africa and Europe along the way.
Canal+ hasn’t shared the full details yet, including how pricing and subscriptions will work, but the goal is clear: to give DStv subscribers a more seamless experience with more variety than ever before.
With this super app, DStv could be entering a new era — one that combines African storytelling with world-class streaming power, all tailored for South Africans.
