What parents should know about the Nestlé baby products recall

Nestlé has recalled selected batches of SMA Infant Formula, NAN Special Pro Baby Formula, and SMA Follow-On Formula across multiple international markets. This follows a potential contamination risk with cereulide, a food-borne toxin.

According to News24, the Swiss group has recalled several baby formula products across Europe since December.

Nestlé has stated that the move is precautionary and in line with its safety and quality protocols. As reported by IOL, it has further been confirmed that no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected products to date.

The company acknowledged the concern the recall may cause parents and caregivers, apologising for the inconvenience and reiterating its commitment to infant nutrition safety.

The cereulide found is harmful as it is a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. Unlike other bacteria, cereulide is not destroyed by cooking or reheating.

When there is an exposure to cereulide, there is a rapid onset of food poisoning, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps within hours of ingestion. This, of course, causes major concerns. In rare cases, severe illness can occur, especially for infants.

Nestlé said, “The safety and well-being of babies is our absolute priority,” adding that the recall is a precautionary measure.

Consumers who have purchased the affected batches are highly advised not to feed the formula to infants and to return the products for a full refund.

Currently, no other Nestlé products have been recalled in the country besides the NAN special pro baby formula.

The following batches of baby formula have been recalled across various international markets: SMA Advanced First Infant Milk (800g), SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk (800g), SMA First Infant Milk (800g), NAN Special Pro Baby Formula, and SMA First Infant Milk (200ml). If you have any concerns about your baby’s health, please contact a healthcare professional.
