5 Surprising benefits of playing video games

Seeing their children go through the natural developmental stages is usually number one on the priority list when it comes to parents taking care of their children.

When it comes to their well-being, a whole list of things usually needs to be taken into consideration, many of these factors include ensuring healthy eating so that they may build strong immune systems to protect them from illnesses, while the other is seeing that they are socially engaging with other children to build their character and advance their interpersonal skills.

However, with the constant evolution of technology children these days spend large amounts of time isolating themselves by being glued to their video games.

While numerous disadvantages come with falling into this habit, several benefits come with developing the character and mental stamina of children.

In the list below we will look at what some of those benefits are.

Improves coordination

Medium – a reputable health and wellness information hub – explains that when children play video games it has a massive effect on improving their hand and eye coordination. This is achieved when they try and navigate their way through obstacles and maps and acts as a mental stimulant.

Increased brain speed

The above-mentioned publication also notes that when children play video games, they need to rely on audio and visual stimuli to successfully finish the mission. Medium further explains that when multiple stimuli are present, it causes our children’s brains to work faster to keep up with their surroundings.

“When done repeatedly, your child’s brain speed increases which is useful for gaming and in real-life situations too,” explains the above-mentioned source.

Develops social skills

We Live Security – a research-based cyber-security company- explains that though children often used to enjoy telling their friends about where they went and what sports they participated in over the weekend, the introduction of video games has brought a broader social element to the table.

This is because the chat feature on online games allows them to speak to people from all over the world and learn about various cultures and traditions.

Improves memory

Wow Parenting – a parenting information hub – explains that both the long- and short-term memory of children are enhanced. This is due to their ability to exercise the skill of remembrance by reading and being mindful of the rules for the duration of the game as well as memorising certain control combinations.

Creativity

Their participation in video games allows children to expand their imagination beyond what they see. These are particularly evident when they find themselves having to create their character or avatar.

WOW Parenting adds: “It calls for imagination and deeper understanding of required skill sets to win the game and experiment with different personalities.”
