SUV’s with a strong presence on South African roads

The rise of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and crossovers appear to be growing in popularity when it comes to their presence on South African roads.

Known for their elevated statue, stylish designs, luxurious and comfortable interior, and ability to venture though some of the toughest terrains, it is not difficult to understand why the rise of SUVs and cross-over vehicles are among the standout options for any offroad or long-road traveller.

One of South Africa’s most well-known insurance companies, Auto & General, explains that one of the main things that influences prospective vehicle owners to considering purchasing an SUV is that it is seen as the ultimate family car.

“SUVs typically offer extra seating capacity when compared to sedans and hatchbacks, meaning that larger families are easily accommodated. Most SUV models can comfortably seat around five to nine passengers depending on the model, perfect for those with larger families. They also usually come with generous boot space to cart around the sports equipment, toys, prams, and everything else that comes with every outing when you have children.”

Meanwhile, the auto fitment centre and tire dealership franchise Supa Quick adds that these are not the only benefits of these monstrous vehicles.

Some other good qualities about the vehicle include:

Versatility- These vehicles often have the ability to perform increasingly well on various road surfaces while their strong engines allow for the towing of boats, trailers or even caravans. Ensuring you have an adventure.

Full view ahead – “Due to its higher seating position you’ll be able to see the road clearly –  hazards like potholes or fallen items on the road can be avoided in time. You’ll also be able to see over smaller vehicles and ahead of you in heavier traffic, and you’ll have the advantage of finding a spot in a crowded parking lot,” explains the above-mentioned source.

Meanwhile, between 2024 – 2025 there have been a few SUVs whose presence have been dominating on the local roads.

Here are some:

  • Toyota Corolla Cross
  • Chery Tiggo 4 Pro
  • Nissan Magnite
  • Haval Jolion
  • Toyota Fortuner
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser
  • Suzuki Fronx
  • Toyota Starlet Cross
