Netflix turns an eye to the sports, possible interest in broadcasting F1

The video streaming service Netflix could be the new home to one of the world’s biggest racing competitions, Formula One.

According to the news publication Reuters, the company is considering a bid to bring the sport to their platform after the contract of ESPN who previously held exclusive broadcast rights for the sport in the United States has come to an end.

This has since opened the door for other competitors like Netflix to capitalise on the opportunity.

Meanwhile, the airing of sports has become a new addition to the streaming platform. Last year they found themselves at the forefront of headlines after streaming the eagerly awaited Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson boxing match – an event which according to Netflix peaked at 65 million concurrent streams.

As of this year, they also entered a $5 Billion (R 92 Billion) partnership with WWE. The 10-year deal gives Netflix exclusive rights to WWE programming such as Raw, Smackdown, and other premium events. This marked their first with a major sports property.

Reuters reports that neither ESPN, Netflix, Liberty Media nor F1 has responded to the rumours yet.

The sports publication Motorsport Week reports that Netflix has also secured the services of ESPN’s former vice president of production, Kate Jackson.

The above-mentioned source added that during her time at ESPN Kate had previously been involved in its F1 output.

Meanwhile, it is believed that her services could do wonders for the streaming company if they were to gain the rights to broadcast the sport.
