Here is why your vehicle’s wheel alignment is important

Being the owner of your own vehicle often comes with much more responsibility than simply checking whether the tyre pressure is what it is supposed to be and filling the car with fuel to move from one point to another.

Because of the hundreds of hours motorists spend on public roads, the car often gets put through some of the most difficult situations which challenges its true character and whether it is able to handle the road that lies ahead. While many may stand the test of time and live up to expectations, one should not be oblivious to the needs of the car when it comes to maintenance.

This is because just like human beings, the vehicle you drive goes through a series of challenges and often these can result in wear and tear. This is why it is important to not only take your car for a regular service but also ensure that all of the other components are in optimal condition for the next time you hit the road.

One of these components is the wheel alignment of the car.

“Alignment refers to an adjustment of a vehicle’s suspension – the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It is not just an adjustment of the tyres or wheels themselves. The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tyres which affects how they make contact with the road,” explains reputable tyre company Bridgestone Tires.

According to tyre company, Minty’s, one way to know whether your wheel alignment is out is by inspecting the tyre itself.

“You may notice uneven wear across the contact patch of the tyre. Perhaps the inside of the tyre is wearing out faster than the outside. It does not necessarily have to be on all tyres but only one could be affected.”

According to the above-mentioned source, other ways include an off-centre steering wheel and noticing that the car is either pulling to the left or right whenever your hands are off the steering wheel.

Whenever experiencing any of these signs, it is best to consult a professional to have the alignment done.

The tyre company Evans Tire highlights that these are the benefits of having your wheels aligned:

  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Longer tyre life
  • Improved steering
  • Smoother ride
  • Fewer auto repairs
  • Preserved tyre warranty coverage
