Motoring: Things you need to check up on before a long road trip

The festive season and warmer months are upon us, which means that millions of South Africans will be dusting off those camp chairs, pulling out those fishing rods, and getting ready to travel from one town to another.

With the long road ahead, it is extremely important that you take all necessary safety precautions to ensure that you and your family reach your destination safely. It is therefore important that you do a full inspection of your vehicle just to be certain that you won’t encounter any problems along the road ahead.

One of the leaders in roadside assistance and technical advice, Automobile Association of South Africa (A-A), recommends a list of things that vehicle owners need to check to ensure that your road trip is one of the best.

Check the bonnet/hood

As within the body, the heart is one of the most important organs of the body as everything flows from it, likewise, the same applies to the bonnet of your car. Check the oil, brake fluid, water, and fan belt and ensure that everything has been topped up and tightly secured to prevent any leaking.

Wipers

Ensure that your wiper blades are in good condition and free of all cracks. If you as the owner hear strange squeaky sounds, it is important that you pay attention.

Check your battery

If there are any leaks or swells it would be best to replace it.

Check your tyres

Inflate your tyres with the correct tyre pressure as indicated on your vehicle. According to the A-A website, this is often found on the inside of the driver’s door or near the petrol cap. It is also important to check whether the thread of the tyre is 1 mm as per regulation.

Clean lights and windows

Ensure that headlights, reflectors and indicators are clear and in working condition. It is also important that you keep your windows and mirrors clean. When driving at night, having dirty mirrors can increase the glare which can have negative effects on your driving.

Emergency kit

Make sure that your emergency kit – which includes an emergency triangle, wheel brace, jack and spare wheel – is all in perfect condition.
