How to regulate your nervous system

by Chumasande Matiwane

The nervous system is a complex network that controls how we respond to the world around us. It regulates everything from heart rate to emotional reactions.

Learning how to regulate your nervous system means managing stress and maintaining balance between its two main parts: the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the “fight or flight” response, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and recovery.

To effectively regulate your nervous system, start with breathing techniques. Deep, slow and rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic system, helping to calm the body and mind.

Practices like diaphragmatic breathing or the 4-7-8 technique can be especially powerful. Another approach is mindfulness meditation, which encourages present-moment awareness and reduces the intensity of stress responses.

Physical movement also plays a vital role. Activities such as yoga, tai chi or simply walking in nature stimulate the parasympathetic system while releasing tension stored in the body.

Additionally, maintaining a regular sleep schedule and reducing exposure to excessive screen time can improve nervous system balance by supporting natural circadian rhythms.

Social connection and positive interactions can soothe the nervous system as well. Engaging in meaningful conversations or physical touch, like hugging, releases oxytocin, often called the “bonding hormone,” which fosters feelings of safety and calmness.

Regulating your nervous system is about fostering balance through intentional practices, mindful breathing, movement, rest and social connection.
By cultivating these habits, you enhance your ability to cope with stress and promote overall well-being, creating a foundation for resilience in everyday life.
