Western Cape residents are being urged to continue being cautious as the severe weather continues today. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of heavy downpours and potential flooding in the Cape Town area last Friday.
SAWS has issued a Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall over the city, as well as the mountainous regions of Stellenbosch, Breede Valley, Witzenberg, Garden Route, and the central Karoo.
Extended weather forecast for Monday and Tuesday, 11-12 May 2026:

These conditions are expected to continue right to Tuesday, as warned by SAWS, with heavy rain potentially leading to continuous flooding of roads, bridges, and some informal settlements.
Yesterday evening, Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre received reports of storm damage across several areas, with roofs blown off in the Cape Flats area of Mitchells Plain and Hanover Park, and flooding around parts of Khayelitsha, Hout Bay, and Nyanga East.

As the storm continues to make landfall across Cape Town, the City’s Disaster Risk Management is currently monitoring areas closely for impacts. On a Facebook post, the City of Cape Town said, “We have had no reports of major accidents on our roads so far this morning. However, on the M3 at Rhodes Drive, a tree is obstructing the roadway, and there are reports of live wires across the roadway on Rosmead Avenue in the vicinity of the Wynberg Fire Station. Traffic officers are on scene and have effected a lane closure”.
With numerous reports of roadways impacted due to flooding or heavy winds, residents are urged to use the Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021 480 7700 to report any further damage.
