These are the benefits of cuddle therapy

We probably have all been through a time where we felt like whatever we were going through could be immediately fixed by a very warm hug. Not that anything will change, but just the reassuring effect of a hug or cuddle makes you believe that everything will be alright.

This is one of the reasons cuddle therapy is a thing. According to the health and wellness information hub, Happifull, a cuddle therapist offers platonic touch sessions, including cuddling, stroking, and hair play. These sessions are said to begin with relaxation exercises and breathing techniques, fostering trust between the therapist and the client. “Therapists may use subtle physical or verbal cues to check in with you regularly, to ensure you’re comfortable. At any point during the session, you can ask to stop or change positions, depending on what you need.”

The above source states that touch has been found to positively impact our well-being, including self-esteem, stress reduction, depression, and immunity. “The effects stay with us after the person has gone. This means a good hug from a friend on Monday could be having positive effects on you throughout the rest of the week.”

According to the holistic mental health practitioner, Bridget Edwards, cuddle therapy is a natural method that stimulates the production of oxytocin, a natural antidepressant and feel-good hormone, in the pituitary gland. This hormone is said to counteract the stress hormone cortisol, reducing the negative effects of stress and increasing joy and happiness levels.

It is also believed to stimulate the production of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which contribute to its pleasurable benefits.

The Bridget Edwards publication lists more of the pros of this kind of therapy, they include:

  • Calms and relaxes the mind and body
  • Increases mood and happiness
  • Reduces aggression and PTSD
  • Reduces anxiety and social awkwardness
  • Boosts affection
  • Improves sleep
  • Lowers blood pressure and heart disease risks
  • Relieves pain and inflammation
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Reduces cravings and weight gain
  • Improves confidence and self-esteem
  • Improves overall health and well-being.
