The health benefits of Pomegranates

by Staff Bona
PICTURE: PEXELS/ POMEGRANATES

Have you ever considered why pomegranates are so popular and why they have been making a real comeback in the fruit bowl for some time? There are good reasons as to why. Pomegranates are these round, red fruits with a white inner flesh that’s packed with crunchy, juicy edible seeds called arils.

Let’s explore the health benefits of pomegranates.

They may be best known for the vibrantly coloured juice, but these unique fruits have a lot more to offer.

Rich in antioxidants

Pomegranates are rich in antioxidant compounds that help protect the cells of your body from damage. Getting antioxidants from pomegranates is a great way to support overall health and prevent disease. To contribute to a longer life, try introducing pomegranates to your meals.

Great for many recipes

These plants have a sweet and sour taste that contributes to a great choice for many recipes. Their deep-red seeds can be enjoyed on their own or used to enhance salads, smoothies, muesli and yoghurt. Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice is also another way to enjoy a healthy drink. So, for a tasty, elegant style dish, add pomegranate seeds to your meal.

Contribute to your digestive health

Eating pomegranate may help support the health of your gut microbiome, which is essential in many aspects of your health. It has been found that pomegranate can increase levels of beneficial gut bacteria, proving that it may have prebiotic effects. These prebiotics serve as fuel for the beneficial bacteria in your gut and support a healthier gut microbiome. The pomegranate arils are rich in fibre, which is essential for digestive health.

Brain health

One of the antioxidants in pomegranate juice, ellagitannins, contributes to supporting brain health. Gut bacteria turn the ellagitannins into compounds called urolithins. These compounds may combat age-related cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease. The benefits of these fruits are endless, and brain function tends to decline as the years go on.
