Health benefits of reducing your screen time

From checking emails to scrolling through social media and binge-watching our favourite shows, screens have become an essential part of daily life. While technology offers many benefits, spending too much time in front of a screen can affect both physical and mental well-being.

Reducing your screen time doesn’t mean giving up technology altogether. Instead, it’s about creating healthier habits that allow you to enjoy life both online and offline.

Here are some of the biggest health benefits of cutting back on screen time.

Better sleep quality

If you often find yourself scrolling through your phone before bed, it may be time to rethink your nighttime routine. According to the Sleep Foundation, the blue light emitted by phones, tablets and computers can suppress melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep. This can make it harder to fall asleep and reduce the quality of your rest.

Try putting your devices away at least an hour before bedtime and replace screen time with reading, journaling or relaxation exercises.

Improved mental well-being

Research from the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that excessive screen time, particularly on social media, may contribute to increased stress, anxiety and feelings of loneliness for some people. Constant exposure to negative news or comparisons with others can also affect self-esteem and emotional health.

Taking regular breaks from screens gives your mind a chance to recharge and allows you to focus on real-life connections and activities that bring joy.

Reduced eye strain

Staring at digital devices for extended periods can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. According to the American Optometric Association, symptoms may include dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches and neck pain.

Following the 20-20-20 rule can help: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

More time for physical activity

Hours spent sitting in front of a screen often replace opportunities to move your body. The WHO recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week to support overall health.

Reducing screen time can free up time for walking, exercising, gardening or enjoying outdoor activities that benefit both your body and mind.

Stronger relationships

Being constantly connected to devices can sometimes disconnect us from the people around us. Putting your phone away during meals or while spending time with family and friends encourages meaningful conversations and strengthens relationships.

Even small moments of undivided attention can improve communication and create lasting memories.

Better posture and fewer aches

Spending long periods looking down at phones or sitting at a computer can place strain on your neck, shoulders and back. The Mayo Clinic notes that maintaining good posture, taking movement breaks and adjusting your workstation ergonomically can help reduce discomfort.

Reducing unnecessary screen time also means spending less time in positions that contribute to muscle tension.

Increased productivity

It’s easy to lose track of time while scrolling through social media or watching online videos. Limiting screen distractions can help improve concentration and allow you to focus on important tasks more efficiently.

Setting screen-free periods during work or study can boost productivity while reducing mental fatigue.

Encourages mindfulness

Without the constant pull of notifications, many people find it easier to be present in the moment. Whether you’re enjoying a meal, taking a walk or spending time with loved ones, reducing screen time encourages mindfulness and helps you appreciate everyday experiences.

Simple ways to reduce screen time

You don’t have to make drastic changes to see the benefits. Start with a few simple habits:

  • Set daily screen time limits for social media apps.
  • Create device-free zones, such as the dining table or bedroom.
  • Turn off non-essential notifications.
  • Schedule regular breaks during work or study.
  • Replace some screen time with hobbies like reading, cooking or exercising.
  • Spend more time outdoors whenever possible.

Finding a healthy balance

Technology is an important part of modern life, but balance is key. By becoming more mindful of how much time you spend on your devices, you can improve your sleep, reduce stress, protect your eyes and create more opportunities for movement and meaningful connections.

Small changes to your daily routine can positively impact your overall health and well-being, proving that sometimes the best way to recharge is to simply unplug.
