Swaddling is often associated with newborn babies, which is very fair because they are cute and tiny and therefore it’s easier to wrap them around a blanket which makes them even cuter and tinier.
However, adorableness is not the only reason babies are swaddled, according to the National Childbirth Trust, this is a traditional practice of gently wrapping a baby’s body in a light, breathable blanket to promote calmness and sleep. It is said to help babies settle more easily, sleep longer, and calm them.
“Another study found that babies who were born early and were swaddled were calmer and had improved neuromuscular development and better muscle tone, and it soothed pain and discomfort.”
Now, you might be thinking that this can only be available for babies only, not at all. As much as babies need sound rest and calmness, we do too!
The practice is believed to lower stress, improve posture, alleviate pain, loosen bones, and release tension, according to Men’s Health. Experts suggest that swaddling and rocking could be a form of self-massage, reducing stress hormones and calming anxiety.
The Eventide Co publication states that the above is accomplished by exerting gentle pressure on the body, stimulating the release of neurotransmitters like oxytocin and serotonin. This deep touch pressure is beloved to also improve sleep quality by limiting excessive movement during sleep, promoting restful and uninterrupted sleep, leading to a refreshed morning.
This publication further mentions that swaddling provides enhanced comfort and relaxation by creating a warm, hug-like sensation. “The combined warmth and pressure of a swaddle create an environment that encourages relaxation. It’s an ideal way to unwind after a hectic day or find solace amidst life’s hectic pace.” Swadling is also said to provide sensory overload relief by reducing external input, making it beneficial for individuals with sensory sensitivities or disorders like autism.
According to Fit Day, adult wrapping, which is also called Otonamaki, is claimed to be a relaxation method for post-labour pain relief and improving posture. “Otonamaki may inadvertently create yoga positions and stretching, which could provide you with the same health benefits as yoga.”
