Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment, which involves pricking the skin with tiny sterile needles. Small wounds stimulate your body’s production of collagen and elastin, which repair your skin and make you look younger. It’s also known as collagen induction therapy.

Microneedling has grown in popularity due to its growing list of advantages. Its main purpose is to renew and plump the skin with minimal discomfort and downtime, and it may be tailored to each individual’s needs.

According to Healthline here are some of the benefits which microneedling can offer:

  • Scar reduction, including acne scar reduction
  • Minimising the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimising enlarged pores
  • Minimising the appearance of hyperpigmentation (dark patches)
  • Leveling out uneven skin tone
  • Enhancing skin elasticity
  • Minimising the visibility of stretch marks
  • Minimising the visibility of scars
  • Encouraging hair growth in alopecia patients

Microneedling may be more effective for people with darker skin tones than laser treatments since it does not require heat, which might impact your skin’s pigmentation, or color. Consult your dermatologist about what’s best for your skin.

Microneedling is considered safe. But like any procedure, it has risks. According to health publication mentioned above here are some of the side effects one can experience such as skin irritation after the procedure however the health publication urges individuals to notify their doctor once the side effects includes of the following:

  • bleeding
  • bruising
  • infection
  • peeling

According to The Food and Drugs Administration, since microneedling can cause bleeding it is not recommended for people who have clotting or bleeding disorders or who use blood-thinning medication.

If you have skin diseases such as eczema or diabetes, or if your immune system is compromised, you should avoid microneedling.
