Throwback adverts that are bound to make you feel nostalgic

The 2000s to 2010s were a different era than the one we live in today, particularly in regard to television and advertising. Here is a list of old advertisements that are guaranteed to make the 90s babies and older light up with nostalgia.

The introduction of things such as DSTV and streaming services has made life look so much different to what it used to be. Back in the day, adverts were a big and important part of TV in South Africa, as they would pop up every few minutes in between viewers’ favourite shows. This led to a familiarisation of ads, with viewers inherently coming up with favourites from the lot.

Here is a list of a few oldie-but-goodie adverts that had mzansi in a chokehold at some point:

Simba ( I wanna be a Simba Chippy)

Starting off strong, we have a Simba ad that probably had the whole of South Africa singing “I wanna be a Simba chippie”. To this day,

MTN (UMoya ad)

Another ad that had mzansi singing and dancing was the MTN ad that had us singing the catchy  ‘Happy Birthday Thabo Baloyi’ tune for some time.

Oros (O-o-o-o Oros song)

If you didn’t know the Oros flavours off by heart before, this ad definitely came through for you as it had viewers, both young and old reciting the song that listed the various flavours that the brand has to offer. The fruit cocktail flavour came as a shock to some viewers who admitted to singing the wrong lyrics for a long time.

Fatti’s and Moni’s (Bravo Mama song)

It appears that singing and music were a big part of the advertising world back in the day, as we have another advert that viewers sang along to. This South African staple had viewers, including the Bona family reciting a language that some had not been accustomed to, but could sing the entire ad word for word.

All Gold ( 36 )

Last but not least, we have this All Gold classic. Thanks to this advert, a whole generation of South Africans can never hear the word 36 without laughing or repeating it with a whistle, exactly the way that Benny says it in the ad.
