The girl who cried racism: MaWhoo shares unpleasant experience at Life Fourways hospital

Amid the rising racial tensions in the country, popular amapiano vocalist MaWhoo, born Thandeka Ngema, has revealed that sometimes even celebrity status cannot shield one from the harsh reality of racism in this country after revealing her unpleasant experience at Life Fourways hospital.

Encountering consistent racism or experiencing at least one racist encounter is a common shared experience for many people of colour in South Africa. Due to our complicated history, this comes as no surprise because although we have worked hard to move past apartheid’s racial inequality and segregation, the remnants and beneficiaries of that system are still very much alive and can be seen in today’s society.

Taking to her social media, a frustrated MaWhoo shared her account of the less than satisfactory service her family was subjected to when visiting Life Fourways hospital as her sister had fallen ill. According to her recollection,  not only did the staff members at the hospital fail to show basic human empathy and respect by being rude and not giving them the required attention, but they also opted to prioritise the white patients who had come after her and her family.

In the comments section, the vocalist sensation reveals that the staff member responsible for her frustrations is Lethiwe Magudulela,  who stated that she works as a nurse at the hospital.

Although the singer generated some significant support and sympathy from her followers on Facebook, the response on X (formerly Twitter) has been significantly different as users speculate that the singer most probably tried to pull her celebrity card, which proved to work against her instead.

These users were quick to invalidate MaWhoo’s experience by sharing their own pleasant experiences at the same establishment, placing all the blame on the singer.

Being MaWhoo doesn’t mean that you’ll be treated like your fans everywhere. She was probably expecting them to lick her toes cause she’s MaWhoo

Probably, she disrespect them by demanding extra special treatment, I have been in that hospital a few times for different reasons, and the experience was top. ?
