As if the country does not have enough to celebrate, South Africa’s epic 2010 FIFA World cup has been ranked as ‘Best World Cup’ in history of the tournament.

It is barely hard to believe that it has been 15 years since mzansi hosted the coveted 2010 FIFA World Cup, an event that left a lasting mark on those who were fortunate enough to experience its magic first-hand. As the first country on the continent to host the popular tournament across its 22 editions, South Africa had a lot to prove, and lived up to any and every expectation as almost everything was accounted for, from the world class stadiums, to adequate accommodation, transport as well commendable broadcasting.

Characterised by numerous unforgettable memories such as Simphiwe Tshabalala’s opening goal, Shakira and Freshly Ground’s catchy Waka Waka song, the world’s discovery of vuvuzela’s, Ghana’s unexpected and dramatic run to the quarter-finals, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez’s infamous handball to deny Ghana from advancing to the semi’s, as well as Robin Van Persie’s iconic ‘flying Dutchman’ goal, the 2010 has been revealed to be among the favourite tournaments to be hosted by fans across the world.

Popular digital media house Ranker recently conducted a poll where they asked fans to vote for their favourite World Cup tournament of all time. With a total of approximately 1397 votes in total, South Africa emerged as the fan’s favourite showing of the tournament.

Storming the comments section, South Africans appear to agree with this sentiment, and have voiced out their pride in their country for pulling off such a difficult task, particularly compared to countries in the West, where development was at a far better place than any African country.
