South Africa’s Afro-pop princess Tyla Laura Seethal has recently set the record straight on social media about her racial identity following her interview with The Breakfast Club, hosted by DJ Envy, Charlamagne tha God and Jess Hilarious.

While on the American radio show, the Jump hitmaker shut down a question where she was asked to elaborate on the debates about the identity of a South African-coloured person.

With comments after the interview, Tyla took to her X (formerly Twitter) page to address her racial identity.

In the statement, the Grammy Award winner said, she is mixed with black/Zulu, Irish, Mauritian/ Indian and coloured.  The 22-year-old continued by saying in South Africa she would be classified as a coloured woman, and in other places as a black woman.

The Joburg-born star said, she does not expect to be identified as coloured outside of South Africa by anyone uncomfortable with doing so, as she understands the weight of that identification outside of South Africa. In closing, Tyla said she is both coloured in SA and a black person.

Even artists are forced to explain their own race. How are we in 2024 and this type of statement is still relevant?

Another one said, “You didn’t need to explain yourself, people need to educate themselves before saying anything. Google exists and they are a search away, they need to leave us alone.”
