Here are five South African jazz artists you should definitely have on your radar:

Leading the charge is Thandi Ntuli, a gifted pianist and composer known for her deeply spiritual and expressive sound. Her music seamlessly blends jazz with African storytelling, creating a listening experience that feels both intimate and powerful.

Then there’s Asher Gamedze, whose work goes far beyond traditional jazz. As a drummer, composer and activist, he uses music as a tool to explore themes of history, identity and social justice—making his sound both thought-provoking and impactful.

Trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni is another standout, known for his bold and innovative approach to composition. His work often incorporates big-band arrangements and conceptual storytelling, pushing the boundaries of contemporary African jazz.

On the bass, Benjamin Jephta is bringing a fresh, youthful energy to the genre. His music leans into modern influences, blending jazz with urban sounds and making it more accessible to a new generation of listeners.

Rounding off the list is vocalist Gabi Motuba, whose artistry sits at the intersection of jazz, poetry and avant-garde expression. Her unique voice and fearless experimentation make her one of the most intriguing artists in the scene today.

Together, these musicians represent the future of South African jazz—bold, innovative and deeply rooted in culture. While they may not always dominate mainstream platforms, their work is shaping the genre in meaningful ways and deserves far more attention.

For anyone looking to explore beyond the obvious, these five artists offer the perfect entry point into a world of sound that is as rich as it is underrated.
