Taking place at the Joburg Theatre on 29 and 30 May, The Rebirth of Ubuntu concert presents a lineup that’s not to be missed.
Curated and produced by renowned guitarist and composer Billy Monama, the Rebirth of Ubuntu concert is a celebration of heritage and South Africa’s cultural diversity.

Paying homage to the youth of 1976, the 2026 installation of this concert is themed ’50 Years of Youth Legacy’ and includes a star-studded line-up. Joining Monama, Lira and Modiga on stage are Vusi Nova and Tutu Puone.

Celebrating icons
In addition to the entertainment, there will be a celebration of musical icons, such as Miriam Makeba, whose music will be performed by Lira, and Busi Mhlongo’s music will be carried out by Modiga. According to Monama, these legendary singers forged our unified cultural heartbeat.

Modiga described her research on the late Mhlongo as one where she got to know the person behind the music, saying that once she cornered that, it’s been easy to honour the songstress ngobuntu.

Asked how she plans to do Makeba justice without trying to be her replica, Lira says she had the pleasure to meet the icon on several occasions, and one of the things Makeba always advised her on was to never lose herself. This is a piece of advice she has held onto for all of her career. Lira, who has publicly shared her health battles, has also challenged herself by learning isiXhosa with the goal of singing Makeba’s songs as authentically as possible.
