On 6 July 2025, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi stepped before the media. He was flanked by heavily armed members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force and delivered what would become one of the most consequential public addresses in South Africa’s recent history.

Exactly one year later, many South Africans are reflecting on what has become colloquially known on social media as “Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Day” — a reference to the dramatic press briefing that sparked a national conversation about corruption, political interference, and criminal networks within the country’s justice system.
The allegations that sparked a national reckoning
During the more than hour-long briefing held at the SAPS provincial headquarters in Durban, Mkhwanazi alleged that criminal syndicates had infiltrated key law enforcement and criminal justice structures in South Africa. He claimed that senior police officials and political figures had interfered with investigations and undermined efforts to tackle organised crime.
Among the allegations were claims that the Political Killings Task Team had been unlawfully disbanded after investigators uncovered links between criminal syndicates, politicians, and members of law enforcement. Mkhwanazi also presented what he described as documentary evidence, including messages and financial records, to support his claims.
The explosive nature of the allegations sent shockwaves through the political landscape, with South Africans across the country debating the implications of his claims and the future of the criminal justice system.
Happy General Mkhwanazi Day!
Today marks a defining moment, a time in History we shall never forget, when men and women did not know what to do when the country was faced with high levels of crime. We are here because of one man who chose courage over silence and principle over… pic.twitter.com/YvfDZNZq0P

The birth of the Madlanga Commission
Just a week after Mkhwanazi’s address, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, to investigate the allegations of corruption, political interference and criminality within the criminal justice system.
Since then, the commission has heard testimony from numerous witnesses, uncovering additional allegations involving politicians, police officials, businesspeople, and organised crime figures. The hearings have led to suspensions, resignations, and further investigations, ensuring that Mkhwanazi’s original claims remain at the centre of public discourse.
A divisive yet influential figure
Mkhwanazi’s decision to appear in Special Task Force combat attire, accompanied by armed officers, remains one of the most memorable aspects of the July 2025 briefing. While supporters viewed the gesture as a demonstration of courage and resolve, critics argued that the optics raised concerns about the militarisation of policing and the role of public officials in political discourse.
Despite differing opinions, many South Africans have continued to view Mkhwanazi as a symbol of resistance against corruption, with his declaration that he was willing to “die for this badge” becoming one of the defining quotes of the moment.

One year later, the questions remain
A year after the bombshell address, many of the questions raised by Mkhwanazi remain unresolved. The Madlanga Commission continues its work, with further witnesses expected to testify and additional findings yet to be made public.
Whether remembered as an act of extraordinary courage or a controversial intervention in South African politics, there is little doubt that Lt-Gen’s address on 6 July 2025 altered the country’s political and criminal justice landscape, and ensured that the date would not soon be forgotten.
