South African couple Melany ‘Mel’ Viljoen and Petrus ‘Peet’ Viljoen are once again making headlines—this time for opening up about their experiences behind bars.
Speaking to South African publication Rapport through United States authorities, they detailed their current living conditions at the California City Correctional Facility and the Denver Contract Detention Facility, respectively.
Highlighting his experience at his current centre in California, Peet said that the living conditions are an improvement in comparison to the previous detention centres, including one nicknamed Alligator Alcatraz.
Journalist and content creator Bianca van Wyk took to her TikTok to release a summary of the exclusive interview.
The couple has reportedly stated that the entire incident was a misunderstanding at self-checkout.
According to Briefly News, Mel, who previously shared why she had allegedly stolen the items, admitted that she may have scanned items incorrectly and offered to pay for anything amiss.
