Mbuyiseni Ndlozi sparks debate after sharing views on anti-immigration marches

by Staff Bona

Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has ignited widespread debate on social media after weighing in on South Africa’s growing anti-immigration marches.

His comments come at a time when protests linked to undocumented migration, foreign-owned spaza shops and rising unemployment continue to dominate the national conversation.

Ndlozi criticised the mobilisation of the marches and how they are likely to lead to violence. He also stated that there are better ways to deal with the illegal immigration problem.

The mobilisation, based on its framing of problems, DOES invite violence & hate. There is no way it is not going to result into mass looting & bloodshed.

We know what we are talking about. We have organised marches since we were teenagers. We have looong engaged in nation scale…

His remarks divided opinion online, with supporters praising his call for balance while critics accused him of ignoring the concerns of struggling South Africans.

Anti-immigration protests gain momentum

In recent weeks, several marches have taken place across some parts of South Africa. Protest organisers argue that undocumented immigration is placing pressure on jobs, healthcare, housing, and small businesses.

Movements such as March and March insist their protests are not xenophobic, saying they are demanding stricter enforcement of immigration laws. However, critics warn that some demonstrations have fuelled hostility toward foreign nationals, particularly in township communities.

Social media reacts to Ndlozi’s comments

The reaction online has been sharply divided. Some users defended Ndlozi for speaking out against xenophobia, warning of possible violence and promoting lawful engagement. Others said his views failed to acknowledge the frustrations many communities face around unemployment and crime.

Standing in agreement with Ndlozi, an X user said: “Whether you like him or hate his guts, Mbuyiseni is a proper intellectual and one of the sharpest thought leaders in this messed-up country!”

“Everyone is saying there’s a better way to deal with things, but none of you is saying what the better way is,” commented another X user.

Disagreeing strongly with his stance, another user said: “The day we take any advice from Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a failed politician, is the day we must know that South Africa is finished as a country!”

Since the marches have gained momentum, March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has also responded publicly, defending the protest movement and rejecting claims that it promotes hatred toward foreigners.

Meanwhile, political leaders across the spectrum continue to debate how South Africa should respond to illegal immigration while avoiding violence and discrimination.

As tensions remain high, Ndlozi’s remarks have added another layer to one of the country’s most emotionally charged political discussions.
