Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) has received numerous fire incident calls amid heavy rain, thunderstorms, and dropping temperatures in the city, though no major incidents have been reported.

The bad weather, linked to the onset of winter, includes severe thunderstorms and potential flooding, particularly in Gauteng and other provinces like the Free State, North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi said that teams are keeping a close watch across the city for any significant emergencies.

“No major incidents have been reported overnight, and this morning, due to severe thunderstorms, which we have been receiving in most parts of the city of Johannesburg. Residents are still urged to continue to exercise caution and avoid crossing river streams while conducting daily activities.

“Our motorists are also urged to continue to drive safely, extend the safe following distance and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges,” Robert said.

EMS remains on high alert and urges residents to take precautions, especially motorists on slippery roads and individuals using heating appliances that may cause fires due to overloading or faulty wiring.

Cold and wet weather, with possible snow in parts of KZN, is expected to persist into the weekend.
