Chaos erupts: Cape Town malls call for action following rise in teen brawls

The sudden surge in teenage fights at several public locations has caused Cape Town malls great concern.

Despite the cold and wet conditions that the city endured over the last few days, Cape Town malls have recently experienced a surge in teenagers visiting their premises to meet and greet online influencers. As innocent as most of these gatherings may be, it has now become a breeding ground for violence.

Some of the affected Malls include Century City’s Canal Walk and the popular tourist attraction, the V&A Waterfront. Last week, Grand West Casino & Entertainment World issued a statement urging social media influencers to follow the correct protocols when planning the meet and greet events at their mall ahead of time, to ensure that compliance measures are in place and that the rest of the visitors continue to have an enjoyable experience.

The news and entertainment publication, The South African, reports that the most recent incident took place this weekend at Canal Walk mall, where a bathroom scuffle turned into a public brawl in the parking area.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said that they are aware of the incident.

“Deployments have been bolstered in the area. However, no one has come forward to register criminal cases for further investigation,” said Swartbooi.

Meanwhile, Table Bay police harbour has since asked anyone with information regarding the teenage brawls to come forward so that those involved in the behind the scenes planning of the “Fight Nights” can be held accountable.
