‘He beat me like a chicken’- Makhadzi opens up about abusive relationship

The multi-award-winning musician Makhadzi has broken her silence on the abuse she endured while in a toxic relationship. 

Known for hits like Pain Ya Jealous and Energy, the singer has built herself quite a reputation in the music industry as a force to be reckoned with.

Not only has this earned her the nod of thousands of fans, but she has also been rewarded for her outstanding work with a BET Award at last year’s ceremony. 

Despite the glitz and glam of her public persona, things behind the scenes were not always as rosy as they appeared to be, as the singer recently opened up about being a victim of abuse. 

Last Wednesday, the Limpopo-born singer took to Facebook, sharing a now-deleted post in which she revealed that she was continuously beaten up by her ex-boyfriend. 

Pictures showed the singer covered in bruises, which were spread across various parts of her body, including her face. 

Captioning her post, she wrote: “Can you see this? I was beaten like a dog. When I asked him why he was beating me, he said it was so I could be uglier, even worse. People must know the truth. There’s someone I loved, and he also loved me, but he beat me like a dog.” 

Despite us now being 7 months into 2025, she reveals that some of these attacks were not recent, but says that she had to endure it during the festive season as well. 

“I was beaten like a chicken on Christmas Day.” 

Meanwhile, the singer vowed to share more details about this dark time in her life with the release of her upcoming album. She fears that doing so might come at a cost. 

“I will tell my story. Just know that my album, #OneWomanStanding, is coming. And it might be my last because they’ll kill me the moment I expose them. This album holds many secrets. I chose to reveal these secrets because I love music. Just say RIP now, because I know I’m revealing a lot, I’m digging my own grave.”
