New week, new news. Check out our breakdown of news that shook social media this past week.

Minnie and Khune part ways.

Minnie-and-Itumeleng

The couple is rumored to have broken up because of social media, no one has released a statement as yet, so we are not sure if this is true or not. They have been on and off since November 2012. We hope this is not true as they make a beautiful couple.

Bonang Matheba leaves Metro FM.

Bonang-Matheba

It’s only been a couple of months since the Queen of everything started her show on Metro FM (The Front Row), and already there has been drama! Bonang and the SABC decided to terminate their contract because she took a job with DStv without informing the SABC. It is rumoured she was dismissed because she had not asked for approval before entering into an agreement with SuperSport.

Bonang’s team released the following statement:

The SABC and Bonang Matheba have decided to end their relationship after the broadcaster’s refusal to allow Ms Matheba to continue a World Cup Lifestyle show on SuperSport. The broadcaster claims that no talent on any SABC platform is allowed to be involved with other broadcasters across any other medium. Ms Matheba and her management could not agree to these terms as it does not align with Matheba’s future business plans. Metro FM is a fine station and it is a pity that my journey with them has been so short. I am an independent freelancer and have been working peacefully with all broadcasters over the years. My future potential cannot be jeopardised by accepting terms that will not allow room for growth in my career. I could not agree to the SABC’s blanket terms – in restricting me to work with other broadcasters even though my contract with them was on radio. Thank you to the team at Metro FM for a wonderful time thus far. Onward and upward!

Judging from her recent tweets, the Queen doesn’t seem to be bothered by the sudden loss of her radio show.

“I am thrilled and humbled by this opportunity. Being a mother, I love watching Disney Junior with my children. I can’t wait to sit down on the couch with my children and watch their faces as they hear my voice on Doc McStuffins.”

Metro FM’s Eddie Zondi dies from a heart attack at age 47.

Eddie-Zondi

Sad news came in yesterday as the country mourned the passing of legendary radio DJ Eddie Makhosonke Zondi. According to Metro FM spokesperson, Happy Ngidi, Eddie was rushed to hospital in the early hours of the morning after complaining of chest pains. Eddie was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. He is survived by his wife Phakamile Zondi. Eddie hosted The Romantic Repertoire on Sundays on Metro FM from 3pm – 6pm. May his soul rest in peace.
