Celebs Celebrate Women’s Day

“You strike a woman, you strike a rock.” We are celebrating Women’s month in ever way possible at BONA. Writer Boitumelo caught up with 9 of Mzansi’s finest female celebs about what Women’s Day means to them and how they plan on celebrating their day.

I personally think women should be celebrated everyday and not just on Women’s Day. The world would be nothing without a woman. For Women’s Day I will be attending a distinctive breakfast just for women. My husband has also asked me to reserve my afternoon as he has planned something special.

Women’s Day to me symbolises how much we have grown as women in South Africa. To me it’s about remembering that growth. I will be spending the day with a friend, it will be her birthday and we will be out at a park having an awesome time.

Usually Women’s Day has always been about who I am as a woman. However, I feel that this has changed as women today are living in a different time. I feel as though we have a long way to go and it is because of this that I strongly advocate women’s rights. I will be spending my day with young women in Diepsloot, supporting the ‘Sunday Session Talk’, which is a platform for females to talk about their life issues. I will be there with some sponsors to listen to them and give them advice.

Apart from what the day represents, and how far we as women have come, I personally think we are now fighting a different cause. Women are now, more than ever, being seen sex objects. I therefore think it is important to stop competing with each other and stand strong together. I will be spending Women’s Day with young women, doing talks with them, I will be very pro-active on the day with 5FM.

I am not too big on the day as a holiday, but cherish the day itself and what happened on that day. I take days like this as a constant reminder that I am a woman living in a free world, and that I have a responsibility as a mother, daughter, sister and friend. I find no intellect in the idea of having a braai, celebrating or going out. I will be working on that day.

It is a very important day to me because people that fought for me and other women made me the woman that I am today. It is because of them that I am able to do whatever I want and am not limited career wise. I pay respect to those women. It is important to keep working hard at what I do. I will be spending the day with my daughter and taking a moment to teach my children about this significant day.

I will be spending the special day with my grandmother and three sisters. Although my nephews will not be with us on the day I find it important to teach them about how to treat a woman so they do not fall into the notion of thinking that women should be mistreated like they are in the music videos we see and in the music we hear.

Although I have not set any plans for the day, I might spend it with my mother. Having recently turned 25, I feel the value of this day is a lot higher now than it ever was. It has come to mean a whole lot more, especially when I look at the women in my family.

Women’s Day to me simply makes me realise how strong we are as women are and how far our strength has come. As women we can multi-task and take care of families. It is good that we are celebrated. However, it’s important days like this that should remind men that we are not punching bags, and as women we should be reminded that we should not find the need to strip down naked in order to be recognised.
To celebrate the day I will be out and about doing talks with young women and using the opportunity to empower others.
