Catching Up With AKA

by Boitumelo Mmakou

Award-winning hip-hop artist AKA is only 26 years old, but already one of South Africa’s leading artists in his genre. Boitumelo Mmakou chats to the hottie.

AKA-

HOW DID THE DEAL WITH GREY GOOSE COME ABOUT?

They approached me and I agreed to work with them because I can relate to their brand; their standard is very high and they produce quality work. I will be hosting Grey Goose events and parties, featuring urban and local artists, next year.

TELL US ABOUT THE NEW CLOTHING RANGE YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING ON?

I developed a line with local brand Head Honcho; a range of clothing, which includes caps, T-shirts, pants and other items. Everything I designed is something I would wear, so my fans and I can look the same. This range of clothes will be available at all Shesha and Sportscene stores.

 AKA

YOU HAVE HAD BANGER SINGLES FROM YOUR NEW ALBUM, ARE THERE MORE COMING?

Yes, watch out for a song titled All Eyes On Me, which features Burna Boy and Da L.E.S.

MANY HAVE COINED YOU AS THE NUMBER ONE HIP-HOP ARTISTS IN SOUTH AFRICA. DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE REACHED THAT LEVEL OF SUCCESS?

I feel like I have a lot of work to do, and if I were to give myself a level, I would give myself a three because I think I still have a lot to do.

 AKA

BEING AN ARTISTS CAN BE A DEMANDING JOB, HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND TAKE A BREAK FROM IT ALL.

I sometimes visit my mother or spend the entire day on my play station. These are the kind of things I do to unwind. I also watch movies and catch up on some television. I think I am a lot comfortable spending time alone when relaxing.

YOU ARE CLOSE WITH YOUR MOTHER, HOW HAVE YOU FOUND HER SUPPORT?

My mother isn’t just my supporter, but she and my brother work with me. This is the best thing for me because nobody can take care of you like your family.

WHAT WOULD YOUR BEST DATE WITH A GIRL INVOLVE?

Kart racing, followed by a balloon ride, dinner, then… dessert.

 AKA

DO YOU SEE YOURSELF SETTLING DOWN AND HAVING KIDS SOME DAY?

Yes, I would like to get married and have children. However, I see myself more with two boys, but if it is girls I will accept them all the same.

HOW DO YOU KEEP FIT AND STAY WELL MAINTAINED?

I go to the gym and do some boxing, that’s been the best way to keep fit. I also get my hair trimmed at least once a week as it grows very fast.

WHAT WOULD YOU WANT AS A GIFT THIS CHRISTMAS?

Besides world peace, my mother and I went house hunting the other day so I plan on getting a new house this Christmas.
