Catching up with the fastest man in SA – Akani Simbine

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Akani Simbine, the 23-year-old multi record-breaking athlete, chats to us about his race preparations and getting an opportunity to train with Usain Bolt.

By: Fundiswa Nkwanyana

1. Breaking the SA Junior 100m record in 2012 by clocking 10.19 seconds at the Zone VI Games in Lusaka changed my life. I have always been athletic, but didn’t know that I would one day be a record holder; sometimes I still can’t believe it.  I was also pleasantly surprised to see many doors opening for me after breaking the record.

2. I train every day of the week. Adhering to my training schedule and eating healthy helps me to keep my competitive edge. I train for two hours in the morning and afternoon, and it’s fun because I really enjoy it.

3. I can’t wait to train with Usain Bolt later this year. Training with him will be a dream come true because I admire him a lot.  I have many questions and can’t wait to learn from him. This is going to be a life changing opportunity.

4. Visualising a win before the race helps to keep me focused. I visualise winning the race over and over in my mind until I feel it in my heart. This also helps to keep my nerves under control ahead of a race.

5. Believing in yourself is the first step to achieving your dreams. I have learnt that self-doubt can prevent you from achieving your dreams. As a young athlete, learning to believe in myself has helped me to be the best that I can be.

Akani will be competing in the Diamond Leagues leading up to London Championships 2017.
