We chat to Generations: The Legacy actress Thuli Phongolo about her acting world. Popular for her role as Namhla, Thuli talks about her journey.

By: Fundiswa Nkwanyana

1.I got my first acting job when I was 17 years old. I played Zama in an SABC 1 drama series called Tshisa. It was exciting because I had attended many auditions, so it was uplifting to finally get a role. Once that door opened for me, I never looked back and grabbed opportunities that came my way. I was also a presenter on e.tv’s youth show Craz-e.

2. I’m grateful that I entered the industry when I was young. I was very gullible, and unknowingly opened myself up to lessons that are now beneficial to me. I used to hold on to the negative statements, but had to learn to filter out the bad and focus on the positive.

3. As an actress, there are scenes where I am expected to cry or kiss someone. Many people advised me to think about something bad that happened to me in the past and draw from that pain to make myself cry in a scene, which does not work for me. I always find a way to let go of past pains and forgive. So, instead I immerse myself in the role that I play. I put myself in my characters’ shoes, and the emotions and tears come easily. I don’t believe you can fake an emotion.  Kissing a co-actor is part of my job, so I detach Thuli and become Namhla. This makes it easier. I’m a professional and it is part of my job, so no one makes the scene awkward. Viewers always think it’s weird, but for me, it’s just another day at the office!

4. I plan on being a sustainable powerhouse. I don’t want to be just another pretty face on television, and fade away after a couple of years. I want to have a sustainable career that is innovative and entrepreneurial. I want to work on my craft and empower myself and others. That is why I am particular about the roles I play, as well as the brands I associate with. I’m going to be around for many years as I will continue to work hard and be innovative.
